We want to take you behind the scenes at Dentons Digital and show you how the websites we make go from concept to creation. In this post, we’ll be talking about website design and the process and questions we ask to get the ball rolling on your new website.
Getting to Know You
We start by getting to know people and their businesses inside out. We want to know why you get up in the morning and continue to put in the graft, making your business the best it can be. Where do you see your business in the next five years on a great day? Most importantly, we want to know how you see your website looking when you close your eyes.
We’d like you to ask yourself, ‘why am I buying a website?’ Do you want to raise awareness of your business and provide information? Do you want customers to get in touch with you or pay for your service and book appointments? Or do you want to sell products with an e-commerce website? The answers to these questions are the foundations of your website design brief.
When we have these answers, we can then plan our next steps forward.
Getting to Know Your Customers
You may not realise it, but different websites attract different types of people to your business. What may attract a 20-year-old university student won’t necessarily be attracted to the same website as a 55-year-old business executive. Remember, when you’re making a website, you are making it for your customers more than yourself.
When you think of the person who is going to buy your service or product, ask yourself, ‘who is it?’ What do they look like? Where do they work? Where do they live? What do they spend their disposable income on? What television do they watch or newspapers do they read? The more you know and tell us about your customer, the better we can strategically design your website.
Customer Journey
Website design based on the customer journey is at the forefront of every designer’s mind. Think of your favourite websites such as a shopping website, news website or software as a service (SaaS) website like Netflix and Zoom. What is it that makes you like them so much, apart from their product? Their websites and interfaces are simple, and sleek, and seem to already know what you want and where you want to go next. This is UX or user design; researched, tried and tested ways to carry a person on their customer journey.
Building your website for your customer is important in all aspects of design concepts including colours, imagery, font, spacing and placement. What is easier to read, one paragraph of 20 lines or two paragraphs of 20 lines
