Creating a Post

Last Updated

Posts can be used for a variety of purposes, whether it’s showing latest news, tips or location guides, your posts can be a great way to display up to date information.

Posts are organised into categories and, unlike pages, can appear in multiple categories should the need arise.

Viewing Posts

To view or create a post, click on the Posts link on the left-side navigation.

This will display a list of posts as shown below:

On this screen you can see the Title of the post, its Author, any Categories it’s currently linked too and the Date the post was published.

Add a new post

To add a new post, click the Add New button which will open the new post screen, as shown below:

Next, add the title of the post in the Add Title field.

The title will be displayed across the website where shown.

Adding Content

There are two ways to add content to a post, either using the default WordPress editor or by using Elementor, a visual editor provided with Dentons’ WordPress websites.

Using Elementor

Elementor is a visual editor that allows you to add content to a post.

Read our in-depth guides on how to use Elementor here.

Using WordPress Editor

The WordPress editor allows you to add content and images using blocks to arrange on the post.

You can add text to a block by typing into the ‘Start writing or type / to choose a block’ section as shown below:

Once you start writing text a new paragraph block is created which you can format accordingly, as shown below:

To add a new block, click out of the text block and click the plus arrow. This will open a pop-up showing you common blocks, as shown below:

You can insert a new block from this menu or click the Browse all button to reveal a list of all available blocks.

You can also click the blue plus sign button in the top left to reveal all of the available blocks, as shown below:

To add a new content block, double-click the icon and it will add it to the post layout. In the example below, we have selected an Image block and added it to the post:

You can add multiple blocks of content to create your post.

Editing Document Settings

Once you have chosen a title and added your content you will need to create the document settings for the post to display correctly.

Creating Document Settings

On the right-side panel you can set the properties of the document and how it will be displayed on the website.

The following options need to be completed when creating a new post:

Categories

To choose which category the post should be assigned too, select the Categories option by clicking the drop-down arrow revealing the current categories within the website.

Tick the relevant categories for the post.

Featured Image

You can also set a Featured Image for the post which is commonly displayed as part of the post header or a post thumbnail.

Click the drop-down under the Featured Image option and click the Set featured image link.

This will open a window for you to choose either an image from your local device or one selected from the media library.

Once the image has been uploaded, or one has been selected from the media library, click the Select button to add the featured image to the post.

Post Attributes

For Elementor websites you also need to set the template to full-width to allow for easier design with the Elementor toolset.

To set the template, click the drop-down arrow next to the Post Attributes option and choose Elementor Full Width from the drop-down.

Publishing the post

Now you have the title of the post and the document settings have been set-up, you can publish the post.

To publish the post, click the Publish button in the top-right corner of the screen.

When you first publish your post you can choose several settings related to how and when the post is published and who has permission to see the post.

These are available under the Visibility drop-down.

The visibility allows you to set three options:

  • Public
  • Private
  • Password Protected

The public setting immediately publishes the post and is visible to everyone.

The private setting is only shown if you are logged into the website and can be useful for posts you want collaborate on with other users or editors.

The password protected setting allows you to create a password for the post that can shared with other visitors to view the page.

You can also choose to publish the post at a later date by selecting the date and time under the Publish options.

Once you have selected your visibility options, click the Publish button.

Your post is now published.
